  • Yale’s Chief Communications Officer will step down after just two years at the helm of the university’s public affairs effort. Thomas G. Mattia, Chief Communications Officer and Special Advisor to the President, announced his retirement Thursday effective December 31, after just two years on the job. His short tenure saw a fundamental restructuring of the university’s communications and public relations effort, with the expansion of the Office of Public Affairs to include internal communications teams and representatives from across the university. His legacy will be carried on by Elizabeth Stauderman ’83, Law ’86, the current Deputy Chief Communications Officer, who represents Yale’s first internal promotion to the top public affairs job.
  • Though organizing Class Day activities will remain the top priority for the Senior Class Council, members said they plan to hold brand new events thoughout the year. The council plans to continue to organize parties such as Mory’s Nights and the Last Chance Dance, but treasurer Ben Schenkel ’12 said he hopes to develop ideas for brand new events.
  • The theaters of New Haven were alive this week, with the sounds of Spanish cinema. The second annual New England Festival of Ibero American Cinema began in three venues surrounding the Yale Campus on Friday, Sept. 30 and ends on Tuesday. The festival featured over 50 independent films and filmmakers from Spain, Portugal, and several Latin American countries at screenings and discussions at universities around New England. The film series­­ — hosted in the Elm City at Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Criterion Cinemas and the Whitney Humanities Center — aims to promote an exchange of cultures as well as support for emerging foreign filmmakers, according to New Haven Program Coordinator and Yale Spanish professor Margherita Tortora.
