A battle is on the horizon. WYBC, Yale’s student-run radio station, will be hosting its annual Battle of the Bands this Thursday on Becton Plaza at 9 p.m. Nine bands will be competing, and the top three will open for this year’s Spring Fling acts.

Bands interested in competing submitted two demos for review by WYBC. Then nine were chosen by a popular vote of members of the radio station, said Ishan Sinha ‘14, WYBC’s director of records. Each band will have 20 minutes of stage time, which includes set up.

Winners will be determined by a panel of three judges: economics professor Sigridur Benediktsdottir, who Sinha said was “really into alt rock,” associate dean of the arts Susan Cahan and sociology professor Ron Eyermen. Criteria for winners include “energy,” “musicianship,” “freshness” and “tightness.”

Past winners include Magic Man, which includes Sam Lee ’12, and Jamestown: The First Town in America, who is competing again this year. The complete schedule is as follows:

Roark 9:00-9:20

The Black Marias 9:20-9:40

Prisms 9:40-10:00

Seven Locks 10:00-10:20
