THE NEWS

  • While Yale is notorious for keeping its endowment holdings confidential, the University and U.S. Department of Energy made one long-suspected investment public in early March. When the Department of Energy announced that it will give a $102 million loan guarantee to Record Hill Wind to support its Roxbury, Maine-based wind farm project, Yale simultaneously publicized its investment in the company. The loan is contingent on the Maine Supreme Court overturning an appeal filed by the project’s opponents — a small but vocal contingent of Roxbury locals has criticized a project it says will harm the region’s environment and ecology.
  • Shin Jeong-ah, the Korean art professor convicted of forging a Yale doctorate degree in 2007, has published a memoir detailing the experiences that led to her conviction.

Shin was a rising star in the Korean art world until 2007, when her Yale degree was revealed to be a fraud and she was caught embezzling from the art museum where she worked as a curator. As Shin’s tell-all book, “4001,” is released this week, Dongguk’s 2008 lawsuit accusing Yale of negligence for mistakenly verifying Shin’s graduate degree is nearing the end of a preliminary phase, Yale Spokesman Tom Conroy said Wednesday in an e-mail to the News.

  • Over 100 New Haven residents could lose their home next month, and as a consequence, 150 more could lose their jobs. The University Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation declared bankruptcy Jan. 10, becoming the most recent addition to a growing list of financially unstable nursing facilities near New Haven. At a hearing in Connecticut Superior Court on Tuesday to determine whether this nursing home — in addition to three others also owned by Omega Healthcare Investors — will close, the State Department of Social Services moved for a continuance of the hearing to April.
