THE NEWS

  • Harvard and Princeton will rejoin Yale in offering an early admissions program for students applying to the class of 2016 next fall. Experts attributed the switch to single-choice early action admission, announced Thursday morning, to Harvard and Princeton’s concerns that they are losing out on top students by asking them to wait to apply in the regular round.
  • Shortly after her husband assumed the role of University President in 1993, Senior Lecturer Jane Levin contacted then-Director of the Yale University Art Gallery Mimi Gardner Gates to explain the Levins’ tastes in artwork: French impressionism, American landscapes and modern works. The Levins were not seeking new acquisitions for the gallery. They were just looking to decorate their house.
  • Connecticut may soon be following Massachusettsin decriminalizing up to an ounce of marijuana. While efforts to decriminalize marijuana in Connecticut have recently failed, State Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney is not giving up. Looney, a Democrat who represents New Haven and Hamden, has introduced a bill in the state legislature that would change possession of up to one ounce of marijuana from a misdemeanor carrying up to a year in prison to an infraction punishable by a fine. The bill is sure to face strong opposition by Republicans and some Democrats, but it has at least one crucial ally: newly elected Gov. Dannel Malloy.
