THE NEWS

  • As police leave, the angels come in. Thirty Guardian Angels from New York and other nearby cities descended on the Elm City Sunday in response to the firing of 16 New Haven Police Department Officers last Thursday. The group of Angels, a volunteer organization that organizes unarmed crime patrols, augmented the New Haven chapter’s ranks on Sunday and Monday, said chapter leader Rocky Pratt. Led by its leader and founder Curtis Sliwa on Sunday and Pratt on Monday, the Angels are capitalizing on the layoffs -and ensuing police union statements that citizens now need to arm themselves- to promote their own brand of nonviolent crime fighting.
  • Just one week after a new Directed Studiessummer program for alumni was announced, nearly half of the 36 available slots are already filled. Alumni will each pay $6,500 to attend lectures and seminars about selected Greek texts taught at the beginning of the Directed Studies program for two weeks in late May and early June. Administrators said they are pleased that 14 alums have already signed up despite the length of the program and its steep cost, which covers meals, lodging and cleaning services in Swing Space.
  • Student-organized art exhibitions arenot the norm at the Yale University Art Gallery, but a rare one did openthere this past Friday. The gallery is currently hosting a new exhibition titled “Embodied: Black identities in American Art,” the result of a collaborative curatorial effort with the David C. Driskell Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. The show is part of an ongoing series of student-curated exhibitions — a five-year-old effort that is part of the gallery’s educational program.
