Last weekend marked the opening of SITE Santa Fe’s eighth International Biennial Exhibition, co-curated by Sarah Lewis GRD ’13, a doctoral candidate in the History of Art Department and a critic in painting and printmaking at the School of Art. The exhibition, titled “The Dissolve,” presents contemporary art that fuses technology with traditional art forms, primarily through animation.

Among the works on display is a video called “You Make Me Iliad” by Mary Reid Kelley ART ’09. The video, which takes place in a brothel in World War I Germany, combines live action and animation to tell the story of a German soldier and a prostitute, both played by Kelley herself. The dialogue is written in lyrical verses that evoke Homer, and the graphic three dimensionality of the elaborate costumes contrast sharply with the flat background.

SITE Santa Fe is a non-profit contemporary arts organization that began in 1995 with the goal of organizing the only international biennial of contemporary art in the country. School of Art Dean Robert Storr curated the exhibition in 2004. Lewis, who is working on a book about Circassian beauties, was invited by President Barack Obama to serve on his Arts Policy Committee during his campaign.

“The Dissolve” will be up until Jan. 2.
