Assistant New Haven Police Chief Stephanie Redding announced Thursday that she will retire at the beginning of July.

Redding, a 25-year NHPD veteran, is in charge of the administrative division and has twice served as acting chief during transition periods in the department. She is leaving at another time of transition: Chief Frank Limon recently appointed three new assistant chiefs, two from the Chicago Police Department, where Limon was formerly a commander. Redding did not give an explicit reason for her departure, only describing the decision to leave as “difficult” and as a chance to pursue “other interests.”

“I will continue to remain involved in serving the youth and families of the city of New Haven,” Redding said in a statement.

During her career, Redding has worked extensively with the New Haven Boys and Girls Club, the United Way of Greater New Haven and the Yale Child Study Center. Redding started with the NHPD as a patrol officer in 1986, later serving as the district manager for the East Shore neighborhood and as head of the family services division, which handles domestic, child and sexual assaults.
