W. HOCKEY | Defenseman Samantha MacLean ’11 will serve as the 2010–’11 captain of the women’s hockey team.

MacLean was selected as captain in a team vote taken at Ingalls Rink last Wednesday night. The Ontario native takes over for forward Caroline Murphy ’10.

One of Yale’s leading defensemen, MacLean played in all 29 games this season. She tallied nine points with four goals — two of which were game-winning — and five assists. MacLean topped the team in the +/– category with a +5 on the season, and she combined with fellow defenseman Alyssa Clarke ’10 to form the Elis’ best defensive pairing. The two were both part of the team’s most successful penalty-killing unit.

MacLean has been a key contributor since her freshmen year, when she was named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week in late February after scoring the game-winning goal against RPI to clinch Yale’s playoff berth. She enters her senior season with a streak of 89 consecutive games played.

The Bulldogs (10–16–3, 8–13–1 ECAC) finished the 2009–’10 season three points out of playoff contention after falling to Quinnipiac and Princeton in their final weekend of conference competition.
