New Haven’s churches are an architectural and historical tour de force. United Church on the Green, designed and built by David Hoadley and completed in 1815, showcases the balanced simplicity of the Federal style, featuring large windows, a 12-foot elevated dome and white pilasters. Christ Church, designed by Henry Vaughan (who also designed Washington National Cathedral) and completed in 1898, is characteristic of neo-Gothic style. It features a red stone tower, a Lady chapel and an ornate high altar. Contributing photographer Baobao Zhang explores.
