3n Global, an international mass notification system provider, announced Tuesday that the City of New Haven used an instant “citizen alert” to inform nearly 130,000 residents and 20,000 businesses of impending winter storms last month. Since first being instituted November 2007, New Haven has sent over one million messages announcing parking bans and traffic delays. The technology uses a map-based GIS notification system to target areas affected by severe weather. Within minutes, individuals are contacted via mobile phones, landlines, PDAs, e-mail and instant messaging. Residents and businesses can register for the city’s emergency notification system online and opt out at any time.
