Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences will freeze staff hiring in response to the university’s falling endowment, the FAS dean, Michael Smith, announced in a Nov. 24 e-mail. All staff searches have been stopped, Smith wrote, and no new administrative positions will be created unless they accompany cuts in other areas. The Harvard Crimson reported that Smith declined to say how many positions would be affected, but a Harvard job database lists 102 open staff positions in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Faculty searches and tenure appointments are not affected by the freeze.
