A Davenport College senior is among 32 students nationwide who this weekend were awarded the Rhodes Scholarship, the most prestigious postgraduate academic scholarship.

Jarrad M. Aguirre ’09, of Centennial, Colo., will head to Oxford next fall after being chosen from 769 applicants endorsed by 207 schools across the country. The Rhodes Trust, which administers the scholarship, announced the winners on Sunday.

Aguirre, a molecular, cellular, and developmental biology major and a junior member of Phi Beta Kappa, plans to study medical anthropology at Oxford, the Rhodes Trust said.

At Yale, Aguirre has studied global health disparities and conducted first-hand research on the subject in Latin American and Asia. In addition, he founded an organization on campus to offer support to Latino students interested in math and science and is working to expand its work to a national scale in order to help more Latino students pursued postgraduate education, according to a biography provided by the Rhodes Trust.
