It was a tough night to be a city official. New Haven Police Department officers arrested three men Monday night after they assaulted a government officer and an alderman at Christy’s on Orange Street, the New Haven Independent reported Tuesday morning. City Chief Administrative Officer Rob Smuts ’01 and Ward 28 Alderman Mordechai Sandman were treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital after being tackled and punched by three Asian-American men who said they were being “disrespected” by Smuts, according to the Independent. Board of Aldermen President Carl Goldfield and Deputy Economic Development Administrator Chrissy Bonnano were also present to witness the fight. The three alleged assailants were arrested for third-degree assault and breach of peace, the Independent reported.
