To the Editor:

As representatives of STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur), we would like to clarify the kicker, “A Ringing Endorsement” (4/2) that accompanied the front page photograph of the Olympic rings on Cross Campus.

The display consisted of photographs of the faces of Darfuri victims and was meant to highlight China’s role in perpetuating the violence in Sudan. It was not an endorsement of the Chinese government’s relationship with Khartoum; in fact, it was quite the opposite. The Chinese government has the power to curb the violence in Darfur but has thus far failed to do so. We constructed the display as part of an effort to pressure China to change its policies in Sudan.
