Waterbury teen wounded in Crown Street shooting

A 19-year-old woman from Waterbury was the victim of a non-life-threatening shooting early Sunday morning on Crown Street between College and High streets, on the border of campus.

Ashley Talavera was sitting in the back seat of a car parked across the street from the popular restaurant and nightclub BAR, when up to five shots were fired into the car at around 2:25 a.m. Talavera, the only passenger in the car who was hit, was wounded in the buttocks.

Mayoral and New Haven Police Department spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga said the incident is still under investigation and declined to comment on possible reasons for the shooting, though she said there were other individuals involved in the incident.

Mayorga said there have been no arrests, and the NHPD believes the shooting to be an isolated incident.

“This is an area that is typically very, very safe,” she said. “It’s understandable that people would experience fear, but this is nothing to alarm members of the community.”
