This Saturday the Yale football team (4-3, 2-2 Ivy) defeated Columbia (1-6, 1-2 Ivy) 21-14. Although the Lions dominated the second half and created some chances at a comeback, the Eli defense bent but did not break. Safety Matt Handlon ’05 led the Bulldogs in a huge stop in the red zone with 37 seconds left in the game. On third down, Handlon tackled the Lions’ powerful tailback, Rashad Biggers, at the 6-yard line. On the next down, Handlon batted the ball out of Wade Fletchers’ hands in the end zone and cemented the win.

All of the Bulldogs’ scores came in the first half, two on passes and one on a run. Quarterback Alvin Cowan ’05 found both tight end Alex Faherty ’06 and wide receiver Chandler Henley ’06 in the end zone and completed 15 of 29 passes for 172 yards. Faherty’s touchdown was his lone catch of the day, while Henley finished with 58 yards receiving. Tailback Rob Carr ’05 also broke through the goal line on a 1-yard rush. Carr had 97 net rushing yards.
