Facing charges of misogyny and insensitivity leveled against them by the Women’s Center, among others, following the circulation last month of the “We Love Yale Sluts” photo, several leaders of Yale’s fraternities have begun discussion of an “inter-fraternity council” — a student-led body of representatives from Yale’s fraternities that would serve as a liaison between Greeks and University administrators.

Fraternity life would not be impeded by the creation of an Inter-Fraternity Council at Yale. If anything brotherhoods could come together and begin to develop a cohesive philanthropic design that would enhance their status on campus as organizations. A brotherhood's strength will always remained tied to the the bond every brother shares socially. An IFC brings Yale fraternities closer and makes them stronger.

What is this "brotherhood" thing? This suggests some sort of biological imperative related to altruism to those with whom one shares genes. This may be a primitive drive that has had evolutionary advantages, but it divides the world into "us" and "them". This tribalism has led to untold human misery.... isn't it time to use the other evolved characteristics of humans such as reason and compassion to get over this "brotherhood" concept of "bloodlines" etc.? Enough already!

As a consultant to one of the fraternities involved, I travel from campus to campus observing interactions with my chapters and the community. The fraternities that that house themselves in an IFC structure tend to be more community based and focus on public image. Many IFCs have loose self governing principles that limit punishments to social probation and recruiting probation. It is key that if the Yale fraternities are to join, that the school be supportive of the effort and make clear some advantages to being University recognized. Many University's will help subsidize some costs to the chapters for advertising around campus, others offer a sort of "amnesty" for social events. This "amnesty" includes working with local law enforcement to not break up fraternity events as quickly, as IFC policies generally include much higher risk management levels than your average house party.
